Career Description

The Air Force has Airmen and medical facilities around the world to provide medical care. Oftentimes it can require a vast array of radiological equipment ranging from x-ray machines to particle accelerators. In such diverse working environments, Air Force Health Physicists must wear many hats including that of Medical Physicists and even Bioenvironmental Engineers.

Career Tasks

  • Make decisions on issues related to environmental, occupational and wartime uses of ionizing (nuclear, radiological) and nonionizing (laser, radar, microwave) radiation
  • Perform radiation surveillance and risk assessment
  • Determine regulatory compliance
  • Respond to radiological incidents
  • Ensure proper and safe working conditions for medical staff and patients at major Air Force medical facilities
  • Direct and supervise technicians conducting base bioenvironmental engineering activities
  • Serve as medical radiation consultant in planning, designing and constructing facilities for storage, use and disposal of radioactive material or radiation producing devices
  • Enforce safety standards for handling, shipping, storing, using and disposing of radioactive materials
  • Maintain liaison local, state and federal agencies on matters involving occupational and environmental health standards
  • Advise command and staff agencies on effective operational risk management
  • Develop measures to control radiological hazards
  • Monitor staff and facilities

Becoming a Direct Commission Officer

To ease your transition into the Air Force, you'll enter a five-week training regimen designed to educate you on the ways of both the military and military healthcare. You'll participate in physical conditioning five days a week, leadership training and classroom studies.
