Career Description

Providing dental care to more than 300,000 Airmen around the world, in addition to their families, falls to a select group of dental professionals. As a Prosthodontist in the Air Force, you'll be a member of this group working to provide the best care possible for every patient you see. And since you won't have to worry about dealing with insurance companies or running a practice, you'll be able to do just that.

Career Tasks

  • Restore debilitated dentitions caused by tooth loss or pathologic wear
  • Diagnose and develop treatment plans of patients with complex, multidisciplinary needs, followed by restoring function, aesthetics and stability using fixed, removable and implant-supported prostheses
  • Use the latest technology with the most up-to-date computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture, all-ceramic equipment
  • Direct the specialty's services for a clinic as well as provide professional guidance to in-house dental laboratories
  • Provide consultation services to the general dentistry staff
  • Perform mentor responsibilities through assignment at one of the Air Force's training programs (AEGD-1, AEGD-2 or prosthodontics residency) accredited by the American Dental Association/Commission on Dental Accreditation

Becoming a Direct Commission Officer

To ease your transition into the Air Force, you'll enter a five-week training regimen designed to educate you on the ways of both the military and military healthcare. You'll participate in physical conditioning five days a week, leadership training and classroom studies.
