Name Chosen for F-35 Strike Fighter

Name Chosen for F-35 Strike Fighter

After months of deliberation, a name has been chosen for the F-35 strike fighter: Lightning II. General T. Michael Mosley made the announcement during a Joint Strike Fighter Inauguration Ceremony in Fort Worth, TX.

The name Lightning II was chosen for two reasons, the first being it’s historical context. With the most air-to-air kills in WWII, the original P-38 Lightning was arguably the most dominant aerial force in the Pacific. Additionally, the name plays upon the similarities between the plane and the destructive force of nature: Both strike quickly and with an amazing amount of force.

The F-35 Lightning II is among the newest wave of strike fighters. These planes are equipped with the latest technology in airframe, logistics, avionics, propulsion systems, stealth, and firepower. This allows the F-35 Lightning II to be an incredibly affordable and supportable aircraft for the US military.
