USAF Colonel Becomes Second Female Shuttle Commander
NASA recently named former Air Force Colonel Pam Melroy as Commander of the space shuttle mission scheduled for launch in August 2007. Melroy is not a novice when it comes to spaceflight, having piloted missions in both 2000 and 2002. She was originally selected to train as an astronaut following active duty as an Air Force test pilot and transport aircraft commander.
Melroy is only the second woman in history to earn the prestigious title of shuttle Commander. The first, Eileen Collins, flew as Commander of the shuttle Columbia in 1999.
Melroy will lead a crew of six astronauts in delivering a habitat compartment to the International Space Station. The compartment will serve as a vital link between the U.S. laboratory and future research modules.
