Prosthodontists help maintain the dental health of Air Force people by restoring debilitated dentitions caused by tooth loss or pathologic wear. These specialists emphasize the diagnosis and treatment planning of patients with complex, multidisciplinary needs. Their diagnostic and planning roles are followed by restoring function, esthetics and stability using fixed, removable and implant-supported prostheses. Prosthodontists use the latest technology, with all clinics having the most up-to-date computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture, all-ceramic equipment. A prosthodontist directs the specialty's services for a clinic as well as provides professional guidance to the clinic's in-house dental laboratory. Furthermore, Air Force prosthodontists provide consultation services that can be in an advisory role to the clinic's general dentistry staff or in a formal mentor relationship through assignment at one of the Air Force's training programs (AEGD-1, AEGD-2 or prosthodontics residency) accredited by the American Dental Association/Commission on Dental Accreditation.
