CAREERS

Internal Medicine

Air Force internists use their specialized training to treat and evaluate a wide range of disease processes by caring for the majority of retirees and their families. While most internists are fortunate to have a combination practice of inpatient and outpatient duties, opportunities also exist for physicians who wish to remain essentially clinic based. As medicine leaders, internists are often called to serve in several ancillary positions, all vital to the operation of a medical center. Those may include pharmacy and therapeutics committee member, subject matter expert for process improvement teams and affiliate faculty of advanced cardiac life support training. No matter what career path internists choose in the Air Force Medical Service, maintenance of essential skills is expected. The Centers for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills courses give periodic refresher training to ensure competency in a wartime environment. Internists also use their teaching skills by participating in graduate medical education, available at several sites for both internal medicine and family medicine residency programs, as well as conducting periodic technical seminars for other professional staff for continued delivery of world-class healthcare to beneficiaries.
